The Haunting
The best-known Deutz Mansion ghost story comes from a user-submitted HauntedPlaces account. In that version, Max Deutz built the house in 1890, and in 1931 a woman identified as Mrs. Mosella Mann died after an explosion while cleaning floors with kerosene. Retellings say a woman can sometimes be seen at night in the second-floor windows and that the smell of kerosene appears inside the home.
That story needs an important correction. The same account identifies Mosella Mann as the mother of diplomat Thomas C. Mann, but biographical sources for Thomas Clifton Mann identify his mother as Ida Mae or Ida May Moore Mann. Until a separate death record or newspaper account confirms the 1931 incident, the kerosene-fire story should be treated as local lore rather than verified family history.
Outside the haunting, Casa Deutz still appears in Laredo's civic and cultural life. In 2022, Laredo's Historic District/Landmark Board reviewed exterior work at 1814 Victoria Street, and Laredo BorderSlam later held a spoken-word event there while highlighting the historic St. Peter's neighborhood.
