The Haunting
Harpswell Harbor’s haunting is the phantom ship from John Greenleaf Whittier’s poem “The Dead Ship of Harpswell.” The vessel was said to change size and shape, sail at full canvas regardless of weather, and appear as an omen of death.
The legend was literary and local before it was a ghost-map entry: Whittier’s 1866 poem fixed the story in New England folklore. Later retellings say the ship’s final appearance came in the 1880s.
