The Haunting

Mission San Buenaventura is the ninth California mission, founded by Junipero Serra on March 31, 1782, and now a basilica, parish, and museum. Its ghost stories include a woman in blue, spectral figures, cold spots, and mission-ground apparitions.

The mission was founded on Easter morning, March 31, 1782, as the last mission founded by Serra during his lifetime and one of six he personally dedicated. It became a California Historical Landmark and National Register-listed mission site; in 2020 Pope Francis elevated the church to a minor basilica.

Reported activity: The HauntedPlaces account focuses on apparitions and cold spots but offers limited firsthand comment depth. The entry should keep the mission's Indigenous, Catholic, and California history central, with ghost lore handled as a secondary layer.
