The Haunting
Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is a sacred Hawaiian place of refuge and royal-ground landscape on the Kona coast of Hawaiʻi Island. Its haunted reputation should be handled with unusual care: the site is culturally sacred, and any supernatural framing needs to sit behind the National Park Service history of kapu, refuge, Hale o Keawe, and the Great Wall.
The National Park Service explains that people who broke kapu could seek refuge and forgiveness within the walls of a puʻuhonua, and that Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau is among the best-preserved examples in the Hawaiian Islands. The area was federally established as City of Refuge National Historical Park in 1955 and renamed Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park in 1978.
Reported activity: Haunted listings usually point vaguely to tragedy and sacred-place atmosphere rather than specific apparitions. The entry should prioritize cultural respect, NPS rules, and the sacred nature of the landscape over thrill-seeking language.
